1 /5 Stephanie Z: I’ve always liked Parthian, but I have to say that some rude staff can really ruin an otherwise great climbing experience. Today I was working on a project on an auto-belay. While I was resting nearby, a staff member named Ralph brought a group over for a class. He stood in front of the auto-belay while giving instructions. After observing for a few minutes and seeing that he wasn’t using the device, I decided to hop back on (especially since there were plenty of other auto-belays available).
However, he abruptly stopped me and said, “Do you mind waiting for a few minutes?” in a very condescending tone. Feeling a bit taken aback, I stepped aside. When the instructions finished and the group began using the auto-belay, I asked how long I would need to wait and explained that I had a project on that route. Again, he responded impatiently: “If you could just give us another 5–10 minutes.”
First, the gym is open to everyone—we all pay for access—and having an instructional class shouldn’t give staff priority over other climbers. Second, I would have had absolutely no problem waiting if it had been communicated kindly, rather than in a tone that made me feel like I was doing something wrong.
The instructor later approached to offer a sort-of apology, but honestly, the whole interaction had already ruined the experience.
