1 /5 Sue: After years of using this gym, I had to cancel my membership.
One of the biggest problems is the fast-food shop by reception. The gym regularly smells of cooked food, especially fish or beef, to the point where it feels more like a low-budget takeaway rather than a gym. Somehow, the smell gets sucked into the ventilation system and distributed throughout the gym and changing rooms.
Trying to work out surrounded by heavy food smells is incredibly off-putting , it badly irritates my eyes, kills motivation, and makes it hard to have a normal session. The smell also clings to your clothes, so you leave the gym smelling like a burned fish and beef cocktail.
It’s hard to tell whether the staff don’t care, or they’ve just been trained to ignore the problems. Other people have raised similar concerns over the years and nothing has changed.
I can’t tell whether this is a deliberate attempt to push food sales or they just don`t care. Either way, it’s disrespectful and something I’ve never experienced at any other UK gym chain.
The opening hours are also terrible. Closing at 6pm on weekends makes the gym effectively unusable for me and a lot of other members. I`ve heard many people complaining about this
The equipment layout is bad as well. When you’re on the treadmills, your main view is the backs of people on the bikes. Usually large people. So that`s what you’re staring at for your entire run.
Safety is not on the priority list either. The treadmill next to the boxing bag is especially concerning. One slip and you’re a headbutt away from a steel column. The same applies to treadmills placed next to metal fence separators.
The boxing bag area is frequently unusable at peak times because it gets randomly taken over by classes. Most staff don’t seem to care how this impacts other members.
Treadmills are often out of order or reserved for classes, which creates shortages at peak times.
When the remaining ones are occupied by walkers, you’re basically queueing for cardio.
The changing rooms are another low point. They’re not clean, and many people don’t bother showering before using the pool, jacuzzi, or steam room. These are often the same people who generously share their terrible body odour throughout the gym before heading straight into the pool , jacuzzi or steam room. From a hygiene perspective, it’s grim.
At peak times, you often have to queue to refill your water bottle, while some people drink straight from the taps. This is a serious hygiene issue as I’ve even seen some put the tap directly in their mouth, even though it’s meant only for bottle refills. The staff don’t seem bothered to intervene.
Toilets are also often blocked and unusable.
There are either no rules to deal with this, or no one enforces them.
It’s a shame, because with a few basic fixes, removing or relocating the fast-food shop upstairs, enforcing hygiene, fixing equipment, and actually listening to members, this could be a good gym.
Unfortunately, feedback and suggestions seem to go in one ear and straight out the other.
