1 /5 Matheus Da Silva-Armson: Edit: I messaged Jummy after another stylist told me that my hair is falling out due to the way Jummy styled it, and Jummy berated me over message with slurs and abusive language before blocking me, telling me it was gods reward for the way I am. To those wanting to get Locs/Braids, never go to a place like this salon. Go to somewhere that has a reputation, a clear portfolio and social media presence that has a clear pricing structure per hours While it’s annoying to take the time to get a consultation ( and sometimes pay for said consultation ) stylists like Jummy don’t care about the health of your hair. They want you in and out of the chair ASAP and don’t care for your hair health at all.
All of the 1 star reviews are true. The space of the Salon is completely unsanitary. Expect to see days old hair on the floor, hairbrushes that havent been washed etc. Jummy the owner of the Salon is routinely unprofessional. Interpersonally, Jummy has a grandiose and aggressive personality; on several occasions I have been shouted at or made fun of by Jummy while I was getting my hair braided/ detangled. I have been gaslit into thinking that I am a high maintenance client due to my mixed race hair and that Jimmys aggressive rough style of detangling and braiding hair is correct. In another instance I was in agonising pain the chair due to how painful Jummys - dry - detangling was and I asked for a break and Jummy ignored me and only stopped when I raised my voice and told her to stop and she told me to be a man.
In terms of the services offered, several times throughout my time getting my hair braided here Jummy has actively done the opposite of what I have asked. For example, most recently I came in to get a retwist to get starter locs/twists turned into proper locs. I showed Jummy a video and several photos of what I wanted and I was told this was impossible, because I had a sensitive scalp. After being convinced I needed to get a full wash + condition + getting my hair braided from scratch ( the more expensive option) Jummy showed picked up a Crochet needle and asked "this is what you wanted right" and I said "no I just wanted a retwist like I asked" and she made a gesture that was along the lines of "Oh well" and then charged me £120. On price, Jummy has no set price list and since going there getting the same style done + a detangle has actively increased from £80-£120; in one instance Jummy quoted me for £100 on the phone and talked me up to £120.
Another example is when I asked for my hair to be washed and then detangled for box braids; the detangle was done essentially dry after a brief wash of my hair with shampoo. Conditioner was not soaked in my hair and it was not detangled wet as is standard. Detangling is routinely done dry, even after if you specifically requested it be done after conditioning. My hair has always was washed quickly, wrapped in a towel, and then brushed painfully while still dry — which is not standard or safe practice for curly/mixed hair. Another is when I went into get cornrows and Jummy did a completely different style than what I showed.
To Jummys credit if you want a braider/loctician who will take last minute appointments etc she is incredible; she has saved me a few times being able to take appointments last minute. However now having done some of my own research I am now aware that the hype around getting your hair braided is always a painful process is untrue. Jummy is a predatory business person who is actively unprofessional, unpleasant and disrespectful.
Avoid.
