5 /5 Barney: Bates Hall is a brilliant local Scout HQ — and a real piece of community history.
Home of the 24th Ilford Northwest Scout Group, this hall has been supporting young people for generations. Plans for a proper group HQ go back to the late 1940s, and the present headquarters was proudly opened in July 1977 — built through the effort of volunteers and supporters.
The building is named Bates Hall in recognition of Cliff Bates (with Roger Bates alongside him) who helped drive the build from foundations to finish — a proper “roll up your sleeves” community achievement.
If you’re near Gants Hill (and the wonderfully dramatic, “Moscow-style” ticket hall at Gants Hill Underground station), it’s worth knowing there’s an equally memorable place nearby where kids can grow in confidence, teamwork and adventure.
Highly recommended — and if you’ve got children who’d enjoy Beavers/Cubs/Scouts, consider joining. Scouting really does make a difference.
